Prayer wheel from Nepal (copper and wood). A prayer wheel (also called a mani wheel in Tibet) is a wheel or roller that contains prayers or mantras, or is decorated with them on the outside. A special form in the Khumbu region are so-called mani stones, where mantras are carved into stone slabs. In Tibetan Buddhism, prayer wheels are spun to combine physical activity and spiritual content. A fundamental goal of this action and basic method of Vajrayana is to integrate all aspects of life`s reality, including the simplest physical actions such as spinning a prayer wheel, into the path to enlightenment. This outwardly simple form of spiritual practice can be linked to various levels of spiritual perspective. According to Buddhist belief, turning the prayer wheels with the right motivation serves to accumulate good karma. A simple motivation for this practice is to cherish the wish that all the mantras in the wheel will work for the benefit of sentient beings, eliminate their suffering and bring them happiness. A more advanced motivation of this practice is to visualize (mentally project) while spinning the prayer wheel that all the mantras contained in it will radiate light to all sentient beings while spinning, eliminate their suffering and dissolve bad karma. An advanced practice of spinning a prayer wheel, approaching the highest view of Buddhism, is to focus on the fact that the spinner, the action of spinning, and the spinning prayer wheel, including the mantras and prayers contained therein, are inseparable from a non-dual nature in their origin. The adjective prayer wheel-like, which describes the monotonous, protracted repetition of something, is derived from the practice of turning the prayer wheel over a long period of time. The prayer chain mala is also commonly used in Buddhism
